Rising Tide Brewing Company is a small family owned artisanal craft brewery located in Portland, Maine. Opening its doors in late 2010, Rising Tide’s nano brewery turned out small 40 gallon batches. The brewery has since relocated and increased capacity, currently operating as a 15 barrel operation.
Zephyr pours a medium amber color with a slight orange hue and a frothy white head that doesn’t dissipate immediately.
A very aromatic brew, the nose is quite unique. Smells of apples and pears with a hint of citrus.
At first sip this IPA is very clean but quickly reveals a pleasant bitterness that lingers on your tongue. The apples and pears from the nose are definitely present in the flavor. This beer can easily be described as “juicy”, as though you took a bite of fresh fruit. The malt is well balanced in this beer, with notes of caramel that complement the apple like flavors well.
Mouthfeel is very clean. The bitterness does linger but not in a sticky, resinous kind of way, but more as a reminder that you want to take another sip.
Overall I really enjoyed this beer. As a fan of IPA’s in general I found this one to be a very unique and refreshing change of pace from other beers of this same style. Fitting of the name, I’d call it a breath of fresh air.
