On a recent visit to Portland I picked up a 64 ounce growler of Autumn Ale by Freeport Brewing Company. I don’t see these guys in stores very often and I had been watching for it so I was really happy to find some at the Bier Cellar on Forest Ave. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the Bier Cellar I’d highly recommend it next time you’re in town, or right now if you live in Portland. It’s in a convenient location, they have parking, excellent selection of beer, wines and mead, great prices and a super friendly and knowledgeable staff, It’s one of my “places to visit” whenever I make it to Portland.
Brewed by: Freeport Brewing Company
Bottle/Draft: 64oz Growler
Purchased: Bier Cellar, Portland, ME
The autumn ale pours a dark amber color with a thick white head that slowly fell into a thick white ring around the glass. This is very clear beer, no haziness at all.
The beer has malty aroma, there are some notes of toast in there. There’s a nice earthiness, picking up just a hint of the hops but very subtle.
This is a smooth drinking beer, there is a touch of bitterness but it blends well with the malty sweetness. The earthy aromas come through in the flavor as well, just a slight woody flavor. I don’t believe this is an autumn ale brewed with pumpkins which I might attribute some of the earthiness, if it is there are definitely no spices in here. Very easy drinking with a crisp clean finish.
Overall a nice drinking ale, this is one I would recommend to anyone, even a non-craft beer fan would enjoy this beer. If you run across this beer from Freeport Brewing Company give it a try, and if you find something else by them, drop me a line and let me know what you thought.
Cheers!
