Coaster Critique: Ridgeway Brewery Lump of Coal

On the Tenth day of Beermas…..

Name: Lump of Coal

Brewed by: Ridgeway Brewery

ABV: 8%

Purchased: Swett’s Hogan Road Deli

Lump of Coal pours as black as night with a short off white head.

It smells strong of dark roasted malts, picking up some bitter chocolate notes and some smoke.

Tastes very malty, dark roasted grains, some slight coffee flavors, bitter dark chocolate and a really smooth smoky flavor. Very dry mouthfeel with a smoky aftertaste. Not detecting the alcohol in the flavor, the 8% blends right in.

Overall a really nice stout, rich and malty, I really enjoyed this beer. On the label it reads “Much more than you deserve this year…” so I guess this is a beer for those of us that landed on the naughty list, sometimes it’s good to be bad.

Cheers!
