Coaster Critique: Baxter Brewing Co. Phantom Punch

Name: Phantom Punch

Brewed By: Baxter Brewing Company

ABV: 6.8%

Purchased: Burby and Bates

Baxter Brewing Co. is located in Lewiston, Maine where in 1965; Muhammad Ali fought Sonny Liston for the world heavyweight title. Phantom Punch is named after the controversial fight ending knockout punch.

Phantom Punch poured black with a short dark tan head that slowly sank into a thin film that lasted for the whole glass.

The smell is malty, strong dark roasted grains and coffee with some light chocolate notes. There is an earthy aroma as well that I believe are the hops coming through.

Phantom Punch is roasty, black coffee and chocolate are the first things I pick up. There is a strong bitterness that mellows through the sip and trails off into a subtle vanilla flavor. This beer has a medium to full body, slightly creamy mouthfeel and finishes dry.

Overall a really nice stout, strong flavors up front with a nice light vanilla ending and a dry finish. I usually buy my beers in singles, but I picked up two cans of Phantom Punch and after drinking the first one I knew I had to review the second and pick up a six pack next time I see it. I’d recommend this beer to any fan of stouts, it’s worth checking out.

Cheers!
