Brewed by: Brouwerij Bosteels
ABV: 11.5%
Style: Bière de Champagne
Purchased: Bangor Wine an Cheese
I knew I wanted my last post of 2012 to be a Bière de Champagne review so I stopped into Bangor Wine and Cheese and ordered a bottle of Deus Brut des Flanders. This is an interesting style of beer and not something I see on store shelves very often but if you enjoy champagne and craft beer I would recommend ordering a bottle.
I slowly poured this beer into a champagne flute; it’s very pale golden in color with a thick white head that slowly sank to a thin layer across the surface that left lacing down the glass as I sipped.
The smell is light and fruity. Tart apples and some peppery yeasty notes with a touch of funk that reminds me of a saison.
The first flavor that hits me as I take a sip is apple, the malt profile is very light and a bit sweet, has a honey like taste. Some peppery yeasty flavors swirl in the background. The alcohol is noticeable in the flavor at the end of the sip but presents itself more as a warming sensation in the throat and chest. This beer is very light bodied with a prickly carbonation and finishes dry.
Overall a very nice beer that would be a perfect substitution for champagne at New Year’s or any celebration. Crisp and delicate with a dry finish and a nice alcohol kick.
Have a safe and happy New Years!
