Coaster Critique: Great Lakes Brewing Commodore Perry

Name: Commodore Perry

Brewed by: Great Lakes Brewing Co.

ABV: 7.5%

Style: IPA

Commodore Perry pours a slightly hazy orange hue with golden highlights and a short white head that slowly dissipates to a film across the surface.

Smell is a nice blend of malts and hops. The hops have a vegetal, grassy aroma with a splash of citrus. The malts come through with a toasted, grainy smell, reminds me a bit of baking bread.

Taste is very hop forward; the citrus I detected in the nose comes through first with a bitter orange flavor, followed by a fresh cut grass. The malts are toasty, grainy, still reminds me of bread. This beer is medium bodied with a bitter, dry finish.

Overall a solid IPA, I don’t tend to like a grassy hop profile but this one works for me, the beer was balanced really well, with the bitterness jumping out more as an aftertaste than a main theme. Great Lakes Brewing is not currently available in Maine, my friend Chris picked this bottle up while visiting family out of state. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out when I’m travelling; I’d like to try some of their other offerings.

Cheers!
