Coaster Critique: Lefty’s Coffee Porter

Name: Coffee Porter

Brewed by: Lefty’s Brewing Company

ABV: 6%

Bottle/Draft: 22oz Bottle

Lefty’s brews are not available in Maine; the brewery is located in Greenfield, MA. I have to thank my friend Rick for bringing me a bottle to try.

This coffee porter pours a dark brown with red highlight. Pour produced a thin white head, steady carbonation is visible.

Smells very sweet, the initial smell reminded me of cotton candy, which I was not expecting. This is definitely a malty beer, I pick up caramel and light coffee notes but no hops aroma to speak of.

The malty smell was not misleading; this beer is sweet, caramel and toffee up front. The sweetness mellows around mid-sip and a mild coffee flavor develops, there is also an almost toasty flavor as well. There is a mild bitterness, I’m associating this more with the coffee than a hoppy bitter.

Overall I enjoyed this beer, I’m not sure I can compare it with any other coffee porter I’ve ever had. I think this one is a bit sweet for me and the coffee flavor is pretty light, but I could see how that combination would be very appealing for someone who isn’t a fan of strong coffee flavors. If you are in MA and run across a bottle of Lefty’s Coffee Porter pick up a bottle, it’s worth a try.

Cheers!
