Homebrew Reviews: White House Ales

This is the follow up to my homebrew day with Chris DiCentes; we are reviewing the White House Honey Porter that we brewed as well as the White House Honey Ale that my friends Josh and Anne were kind enough to donate a few bottles of.

Name: White House Honey Porter

Homebrewed By: Chris DiCentes

Pours a very deep brown-black, some red highlights show through when held up to the light, pour raised a short, tan head that fell quickly.

Smells very sweet, dark malts and honey are prominent, some alcohol in the background. Chris picked up notes from the hops that I didn’t.

Taste follows the nose, malty and sweet, the honey has a nice smooth flavor. The bitterness comes in late in the taste but is light; some more bittering hops would have helped balance out the sweetness in this beer.  Chris found this beer to have a warming effect on his tongue from the alcohol and finished clean with no strong aftertaste.

Overall a good beer but a bit sweet for my taste, it’s only a couple weeks old so I’m interested to see how it develops over the next month or so. Chris found this beer to drink really well and he’s enjoying it very much and turned out “Way better than I thought it would”.

Name: White House Honey Ale

Homebrewed By: Josh and Anne Schmersal

Pours dark amber with reddish highlights and raised a short white head.

The honey ale smells sweet but more of a malty sweet, the honey is very light in the nose, also picking up some bready notes.

The honey is very noticeable in the flavor, it adds a nice sweetness, malt has a biscuity flavor. There is a light bitterness but no real hop flavor; there is a slight tangy flavor towards the end, unsure if this is due to being an extract brew or a component of the honey flavor. The beer has a medium body and finishes pretty clean.

Overall a really drinkable beer, it’s malty and sweet but not in an overpowering way, it still has a nice balance. I would definitely brew this beer to have for myself.

Cheers
