As a card carrying member of the Rogue Nation, I drink by the pledge to Dare, Risk, Dream. I fear no beer and welcome the extreme, unusual, adventurous and sometime even insane concoctions being brewed up. I’ve had a pale ale brewed with jalapeno’s that was so hot it was borderline undrinkable, I’ve had a spruce ale that tasted like they ran a Christmas tree through a juicer and carbonated it, I have never turned down a beer because of an ingredient, because you just don’t know until you’ve tried it. While browsing the Rogue website recently I saw that they had released another Voodoo Donut beer, the previous beer was the Maple Bacon Donut (I have a bottle in the fridge to review soon), and this new one is based on the Voodoo Memphis Mafia donut, since I was already ordering I picked up a bottle.

Pours a very dark, almost black with a frothy tan head that lasted the whole glass and left a lot of lacing down the glass.
Smells a bit sweet, some dark malts come through, not picking up any peanut butter, maybe just a touch of chocolate, the banana comes through strong but smells artificial, it actually reminds me of those banana flavored hard candies.
Tastes of dark grains, based on the smell I was expecting a much sweeter beer but that’s not the case. The chocolate comes through lightly up front but is quickly overtaken by the banana, which like the smell has an artificial flavor, the peanut butter shows up mostly in the aftertaste but it’s very light, I’m not sure I would pick it out if I wasn’t looking for it. This beer finishes dry with a slight bitterness.
Overall an interesting beer that makes me want to try the donut it was based on, but probably not something I would pick up again. I do think this would be a really fun beer to slide into the lineup of a blind tasting with friends. If you are like me and always want to try something new and unusual then I would recommend looking for a bottle of this beer and remember to always Dare, Risk, Dream.
What is the most extreme, unusual, adventurous or insane beer that you have tried and how was it?
