Coaster Critique: Murphy’s Irish Stout

Name: Murphy’s Draught Style Stout
Brewed By: Murphy Brewery
ABV: 4%
Purchased: Bangor Wine and Cheese

With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner I thought it was time to review an Irish Stout. When I’m faced with a choice between Guinness and Murphy’s I often lean towards a Murphy’s, it’s a stout I’ve enjoyed since I could legally belly up to the bar.

Murphy’s has a draught widget inside so popping the top comes with a gurgle from inside the can. The beer pours the color of chocolate milk but watch the glass, bubbles cascade revealing a deep black color that glows reddish in thinner parts of the glass when held to the light and leaves a thick creamy khaki colored head.

Nose is slightly roasty, some chocolate and vanilla with a touch of coffee in the background.

Murphy’s at first sip is a bit sweet but then a really mellow bitterness sets in with dark chocolate and coffee flavors. The draught widget gives this beer a thick, creamy almost chewy mouthfeel but I don’t find it to be “heavy” as stouts are often made out to be. Murphy’s finishes dry with a light coffee aftertaste.

Overall a really nice Irish stout, I will say I prefer it on tap as opposed to cans, I had one recently at Paddy Murphy’s and I may have to have another on St. Patrick’s Day, but if you want to try it at home pick up a can, if you like Irish Stouts I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one.
