Coaster Critique: Iron Throne

HBO partnered with Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown New York to create a blonde ale for the popular Game of Thrones series, Iron Throne is the first of the series being released in time for the season 3 premier on March 31st.

Name: Iron Throne

Brewed By: Brewery Ommegang

Style: Blonde Ale

ABV: 6.5%

Purchased: Bangor Wine and Cheese

Iron Throne Poured a hazy golden color with a huge pure white head that wouldn’t settle.

Smells malty, toasted grains, slightly sweet, picking out a light earthy hop aroma and there is a subtle spiciness from the yeast, the lemon peel is noticeable as well but it blends in really well.

I really enjoyed the bready malt character of this beer, nowhere near as sweet as the nose would have suggested, there is just a touch of spice that compliments the splash of lemon. I’m also getting a bit of a banana flavor and just a touch of earthy, slightly grassy hops. Medium bodied with a lively carbonation and a dry crisp finish.

Overall a really enjoyable beer, Brewery Ommegang always does a great job with their beers and this one hit the mark. I’ve never seen the Game of Thrones series so this is just another great Ommegang beer to me but I would definitely buy this one again. If you’re looking to try Iron Throne it was just tapped at Nocturnem Draft Haus (on 3-25-13) and there will be a tasting at Bangor Wine and Cheese on Thursday (3-28-13), or you can pick up a bottle for the season 3 premier on Sunday March 31.

Cheers!
