Coaster Critique: Slumbrew – Lobstah Killah

Name: Lobstah Killah

Brewed By: Slumbrew (Somerville Beer Company)

Style: Imperial Red Ale

ABV: 8%

Purchased: Burby and Bates

I’ve been waiting for Lobstah Killah to become available in the area, I don’t know why but if there is lobster on the label I have to review it. I’ve already done Belfast Brewing Lobster Ale and RedHook Black Lobstah Lager so why not Slumbrew Lobstah Killah.

Lobstah Killah pours a deep shadowy red color, hazy in the glass with a thick off white head.

The nose is full of hops, sticky, resinous, piney hops. Through the initial burst of hops you can make out the caramel malt body, some biscuity notes and just a wisp of alcohol mixed in there.

The hops flavor is pretty complex in this beer, I get a real mellow hop flavor up front, some pine and citrus notes then a more intense hops flavor sets in that’s more grassy but not to the point of being harsh. The beer has a medium to full body with a slightly creamy mouthfeel and light carbonation. The malt profile is slightly sweet, caramel and toasted grains, just a hint of alcohol.

I found Lobstah Killah very enjoyable, I love the big hop presence and the fact that it does not overpower the flavor of the beer, that being said I don’t think this is a beer for everyone, if hops are your thing go find a bottle. I should probably mention that Lobstah Killah is not brewed with lobsters so no concerns if you can’t have lobster.

Cheers!
