Coaster Critique: Peak Organic Weiss Principal

Name: Weiss Principal

Brewed By: Peak Organic

Style: Imperial German style Hefe-Weisse

ABV:  8.6%

Purchased: Hogan Road Deli

Weiss Principal poured a slightly cloudy, golden straw color with a thin, pure white head and a steady visible carbonation.

Picking up just a hint of wheat in the nose, aroma is dominated by strong, grassy hops.

Interesting flavor combination, at first sip I get wheat, banana and cloves that I would expect with a German style Hefe that is followed closely with an assertive hop flavor. The hops flavor is far more pleasant than the nose let on, pine and citrus as opposed to fresh cut grass. The sip finishes with a lingering hop flavor and a slight alcohol heat.

Overall I enjoyed this beer, the traditional Hefe flavors played well with a big hop presence although I did not care so much for the aroma of this beer, the grassy hop smell had me concerned I was about to take a sip of something much more aggressive than it actually was. I would recommend this beer to anyone who’s a fan of IPA’s or anyone who wants to try a different twist on a German style Hefe-Weisse.

Cheers!
