Coaster Critique: Friars Brewhouse, Whoopie Pie Porter

On the Eighth Day of Beermas……

Name: Whoopie Pie Porter

Brewed By: Friars Brewhouse

Style: Chocolate Porter

ABV: 7%Whoopie

While not a Christmas beer like the Friars St. Nicholas Ale, I felt the Whoopie pie porter had a place in the 12 days of Beermas, whether it be a gift for under the tree or a dessert beer for Christmas Eve this beer made sense.

Whoopie pie pours a deep black color that when held to the light allows less than a glow shine through, pour produced a rocky, khaki colored head.

Smells like a whoopie pie, rich chocolate, hints of vanilla and crème. Smells sweet like the dessert the friars produce in their bake house.

Hints of husky grain are present up front but quickly give way to chocolate and vanilla. The initial sip is sweet followed by a creamy buttery flavor and mouthfeel, finishes dry with dark chocolate aftertaste.

Overall a fun beer worth trying, Mainers love their whoopie pies and the friars bake some good ones, this beer is a liquid interpretation of the sweet treats they sell at the bakehouse in Downtown Bangor. Pick up a bottle of Whoopie pie at Bangor Wine and Cheese then stop downtown at the Bakehouse for a whoopie pie to pair with it, but make sure you share unless you have a real sweet tooth.
