Coaster Critique: Shipyard Black IPA

Name: Black IPAPour

Brewed By: Shipyard Brewing Company

Style: Black IPA / Cascadian Dark Ale

ABV: 6.2%

Shipyard’s newest offering pours a deep black that when held to the light takes on a murky crimson; the pour produced a short, dirty brown head.

The nose is pleasant, slightly husky, roasted grains, a hint of sweetness, dark chocolate and a nice bouquet of hops that come forward with pine and orange peels.

Flavor is malt forward, sip starts out with a deep roasty flavor that carry’s a bit of a husky grain bite, slight note of bitter chocolate that then gives way to the hops that have an herbal, earthy, piney flavor. The beer is medium bodied and finishes with pleasant bitterness, the aftertaste is grainy and leaves behind a slightly buttery mouthfeel.

Overall a solid black IPA, I find this style and Shipyard to be a hit or miss for me. I found the aroma of this beer enticing and where I feel the hop flavor was lacking slightly that bitterness was spot on. I didn’t care for the leftover buttery mouthfeel but it was sort of an encouragement to keep sipping and I’m ok with that. After the Bluefin Stout, I would say this is my next favorite Shipyard Beer.

Cheers!
