Coaster Critique: Magic Hat Dream Machine

Name: Dream MachinePour

Brewed By: Magic Hat Brewing Company

Style: IPL (India Pale Lager)

ABV: 5.7%

Pours super clear, bright golden straw color with a short, pure white head.

Smells of light, crackery malts, a touch of caramel and hops. Hops smell of earth, tree bark, fresh cut grass and just a hint of citrus peel.

Initial sip is crisp and clean, a bit watery. Malt flavor is subtle, lightly toasted bread, hints of caramel sweetness then the hops present themselves on the tail end. The hops burst in about mid sip, the sweetness that was initially there is wiped out with a palate drying bitterness that is persistent but not at all overwhelming. Hop flavor is not as grassy as the aroma suggested but more citrusy, grapefruit, orange and lemon, the bitter flavor somewhat resembles that citrus fruit pith as if you bit too close to the rind. Light in body, light in carbonation with a dry, bitter aftertaste that lingers and urges you to take another sip.

CAP

Dream Machine is Magic Hat’s newest year round offering which will be hitting the shelves in early March. No big secret I’m a huge fan of IPA’s and lagers are hit or miss for me, IPL’s are the perfect crossover for me. This beer was crisp and clean like a lager and full of hop aroma and flavor like an IPA, the citrus flavor lingered a bit longer than I’d like but acted as a prompt to take another sip. If Magic Hat starts canning this beer it’ll find itself in my cooler lakeside this summer for sure.

Cheers!
