So Folkin’ Hoppy appears hazy in the glass with a shadowy amber color that glows red when held to the light and raises a short, pure white head.

Nose is hop forward a mild pine aroma followed by a pleasant citrus fruit aroma, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple. I pick up some of the malt in the nose but very little, just a touch of toast in the background.

I’m greeted with malty sweetness and toasted grains at the beginning of the sip followed immediately by grapefruit and pineapple and a fresh herbal, earthy grass and pine needle flavor. Medium in body with light carbonation, a dry, slightly bitter finish and a lingering hop flavor.

Overall a nice drinking IPA. The first time I tried this beer was on tap in Portland at the Great Lost Bear and I found it to be way out of balance, very bitter and not a pleasant beer to drink, but that was nine months ago and the can I’m drinking tonight is balanced, flavorful and a pleasure to say the least. I can’t say for sure, maybe it was a recipe tweak or that first beer I tried was just off but I’m glad I left them some time and doubled back for another try. Funky Bow has been distributing in cans for a couple weeks now so it should be easier than ever to get ahold of their beer.

Cheers!
