Greater Bangor brewery updates

I find it difficult to keep up with what’s happening with breweries in the Greater Bangor Area, I follow them all on their social media accounts but tend to miss some updates and announcements. I gathered up what’s been going on for an update on the Bangor beer scene.

Square Tail Brewing Company in Amherst has been busy since I last visited, they’ve completed their brewhouse, done water testing and brewed two batches of beer. They have decided to move their grand opening out until early spring, date to be determined, while they apply finishing touches to the tasting room, fine tune their recipes and dial in the brewing equipment.

Geaghan Brothers Brewing in Bangor and Brewer is making slow but steady progress on their production facility at the Brewer location. Contractors have been on site finishing pipe work for tanks, boiler, condenser and glycol units. The new brewhouse, platform and bottling line should be arriving any day now (if it hasn’t already) with fermentors arriving in the near future. Timeline for final testing and first batches are dependant on final paperwork and inspections but hopefully very soon.

Sea Dog Brewing Company in Bangor has seen a change in the brewhouse since my last visit. Head Brewer, Brooks Mathews has stepped away to focus on his greenhouse business. Austin Japs, a brewer that has been with Sea Dog since 2011 has taken over as Head Brewer.

Black Bear Microbrew in Orono has made some improvements in the taproom and expanded their hours. Black Bear installed a new walk in cooler that supports the upgraded 16 tap system. The extra taps will feature new small batch beers brewed specifically for the tap room, I didn’t get any details on what beers are in the works but owner, Tim Gallon, did mention lagers. The taproom hours have also been expanded, they will now be open on Mondays and the hours are as follows:

  • Mon – Wed: 3pm – 10 pm
  • Thurs – Fri: 3 pm- 11 pm
  • Sat 2pm – 10 pm

Orono Brewing Company in Orono is open for business. OBC opened its doors on New Years Eve and hasn’t looked back. They are open seven days a week for samples, pints and growler fills. OBC beers are also available at Woodmans Bar and Grille in Orono and Verve Bangor. Head Brewer Asa Marsh-Sachs has already filled his fermenters with some new beers so look out for those in the near future.

There have been a lot of whispers lately about a new brewery coming to Brewer, Maine. Mason’s Brewing Company is currently in development and expected to break ground sometime this spring. More details to come.
