Atlantic Brewing Company flashed some photos on their facebook page the other day of packaging for a new double IPA they’ll be brewing named 04609.

04609 is the Bar Harbor zip code, a nod to the town and community that has supported the brewery and allowed them to grow and be successful. Part of the proceeds from 04609 will be used to fund a hop pilot program at a local farm on Mount Desert Island.

Sweet Pea Farm will be working with Atlantic on the trial hop program, 75 plants will be planted, Cascade, Centennial and Nugget varieties. Over the next few years as these plants develop and produce a viable crop, Atlantic plans to transition away from purchased hops to using the Cascade and Centennial grown at the farm, with hopes that it adds a truly local flavor to the beer.

Having a local farm growing hops keeps money close to home, supports local business and hops are close at hand for the brewery, whether they dry them or pluck them fresh from the bine for a wet hop beer. Craft beer consumes a lot of hops so it’s good to see Atlantic working with a local farmer to produce a crop that will help meet their demand.

04609 will be available as part of Atlantic Brewing small batch series which includes Ellen’s Coffee Stout, MacFoochie’s Scottish Ale and Brother Adam’s Bragget. Traditionally these beer can be found in 22oz bottles, they will soon be available in 4-packs of 12oz bottles.
