Allagash Brewing wants you to #DrinkItNow

I have never committed myself to growing an extensive collection of cellared beers, I do enjoy picking up barleywines and imperial stouts or the occasional wild beer to stash away for a year or two to see how they develop. I have a couple small verticals (bottles in consecutive years) I’m building to do a tasting and compare them year over year but my collection rarely exceeds 15 bottles and often when I pick up a new bottle to age I’ll pull something out to drink. I know plenty of beer geeks who have committed to their collection though, they’ll have a walk in closet or a corner of their basement set up with shelves and boxes of beer, they’ll keep a detailed inventory of their beer in case they need to propose a trade or maybe that’s part of the fun of having a big collection.

There are all sorts of reasons to collect beers and hide them away to age, whether you want to see how a beer changes over time or because you want something special on hand for a special occasion or because investing money into a collection is your thing, it’s actually pretty easy to find a reason to keep a beer but it might be more difficult to talk yourself into opening a beer that you’ve been saving for years.

Allagash Brewing Company has set out to give you a reason to open a bottle or two from your collection. On Sunday, February 21, 2016 Allagash Brewing Company wants you to look into your cellar, find a bottle or two that has a story and share it with them on social media using #DrinkItNow.

I want to participate but I don’t really have any stories for my beers, I haven’t waited in line for hours, I don’t have any bottles obtained in a wild trade or on a cross country trek with friends, but maybe you do, and that’s what Allagash is looking for, pop a beer and share a story with the #DrinkItNow hashtag. Maybe you just bought a beer to hold for a special occasion and it just hasn’t happened yet, #DrinkItNow is the occasion you’ve been waiting for.

Allagash and its employees will be telling their own stories and they’ve asked their friends to join in the fun, Firestone Walker, Wicked Weed and Sierra Nevada will be participating and they want you to be involved as well, so take a look at what you’ve got, find a fun bottle to drink and share, don’t forget the hashtag #DrinkItNow, this Sunday, February 21, 2016 whenever you feel like sharing.

Here’s what I’ve picked out of my cellar to #DrinkItNow, a couple bottles from 2013, a Tenya Creek Old Jackalope Barleywine and a Rising Tide Polaris barrel aged wheat stout.

Cheers!
